Hendrik Adolf de Nijs (1844 - 1894)

Biography

Hendrik Adolf de Nijs was the son of Geertruij de Nijs and an unknown father^[1]
He married twice:

1. Sara Cornelia Patist at 25^[2]
   
2. Wilhelmina Schouten at 36^[3]
   

He passed away at age 49^[4]

Military Service

Hendrik is first mentioned in the militia registers of Utrecht, in May of 1864^[5]. His father in recorded as 'unknown'. Other information about the man Hendrik that is found here is his occupation before his military service - he was an 'opperman', which is a sort of labourer who worked in general maintenance and cleaning - and that he was declared fit for military service. He was drawn as a conscript, his lottery number was called up; he was enlisted in the 7th Infantry Regiment on the 12th of May, 1864.

Hendrik is also recorded in the military 'stamboeken'^[6]. Hendrik was not in the Infantry for long; on the 27th of June in the same year, he was transferred to the Miners' and Sappers' Battalion. He was stationed there for six years, with f30 hand money.

He was promoted to a Miner, 1st Class, on the 16th of December, 1866.

Hendrik was passported (given indefinite leave without pay) by request, and this was done in 1870, on the 14th of March, 1870.
